Carmarthenshire's Rivers

Carmarthenshire is a county of many rivers, only 8 of these however, will eventually reach the sea. These are: Teify, Taf, Tywi, Gwendraeth, Dulais (near Llanelli), Lleidi )near Llanelli), Loughor, Usk.

The Teifi has its source in the Cambrian mountains at Llyn Teifi, one of several lakes known collectively as the Teifi Pools. It then travels 117 km (73 mi) before reaching the sea at Cardigan in Ceredigion. For much of its length it forms the boundary between Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion. Its main tributaries within Carmarthenshire are:
  • Afon Tyweli (6.3km)
  • Afon Cych (13km), which forms the boundary between Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.
The Taf has its source in the Preseli Hills of north Pembrokeshire and travels about 50 km (30mi) through Carmarthenshire to become one of three rivers that reach the sea at Carmarthen Bay. Its main tributaries are:
  • Afon Cynin
  • Afon Dewi Fawr
  • Afon Cywyn
